Varnished Heald and Eye:-
The varnished heald is a key accessory in handloom
weaving, available in two main types: Cotton Varnished Heald and Nylon
Varnished Heald.
Each heald has a Male Eye — a type of hole through
which the warp threads pass. Every heald shaft contains these Male Eyes to
guide and control the warp.
The primary function of the varnished heald is to
separate the warp threads into two layers in an accurate and smooth manner.
They measure about 12 to 14 cm in length, with smooth,
rectangular wooden strips fixed at the top and bottom. Cotton or nylon threads
are coated with deep varnish to strengthen and protect them — this process
gives the heald its name, Varnished Heald.
Wire Heald:-
The wire heald, measuring 23 to 28 cm, is made of iron
or steel. Like the varnished heald, it has a Male Eye for passing warp threads.
Its unique feature is its flexibility and movement,
making it especially useful for group drafting in weaving.
Importance of Lease Rod in Weaving
The lease rod is an essential part of the handloom,
positioned at the back of the heald. After the warp threads are released from
the warp beam, they first pass through the lease rod before entering the heald
and reaching the fell of the cloth.
Its functions are crucial:
Prevents entanglement of warp threads.
Aids in preparatory processes by keeping threads in order.
Helps in joining broken warp threads during weaving.
Lease rods are traditionally made of bamboo, wood, or
steel, combining strength with smooth handling of threads.
