National Handloom Day was first celebrated on 7th August 2015 in Chennai, organised by the Government of India in collaboration with the Weavers’ Service Centre. The date holds historical importance. On 7th August 1905, at Town Hall in Calcutta, a resolution was passed to boycott machine-made fabric and promote Khadi Vastra, marking the beginning of the Swadeshi Movement.
